2022 Top 100 Most Dangerous Cities in the U.S.

Our research reveals the 100 most dangerous cities in America with 25,000 or more people, based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents.  Violent crimes include murder, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault.  The data used for this research are the number of violent crimes reported to have occurred in each city, and the population of each city.

Monroe, LA is back in the number one spot this year as the most violent city in America with a violent crime rate of 29.4 per 1,000 population, and the chance of being a violent crime victim is 1 in 34.  The city reported 1,403 violent crimes last year, up 66% from the prior year.

There are some newcomers to the list this year.  Salt Lake City, UT appears back on the list for the first time since 2018 at number eighty with a 26% year-over-year increase in its violent crime rate.  The state of Iowa has not had any dangerous cities appear on our list since 2019.  This year, Council Bluffs and Ottumwa, IA appear on this year’s list at numbers eighty-nine and ninety-four.  Council Bluffs had a 15% increase in the violent crime rate compared to last year.  Terre Haute, IN, a city just east of the Illinois border, is the newcomer with the highest violent crime rate of 14.6 per 1,000 population.  This is an increase of 502% compared to the previous year.
