East Hampton is a very small coastal village (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of New York. With a population of 1,531 people and seven associated neighborhoods, East Hampton is the 678th largest community in New York. East Hampton has an unusually large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic villages. East Hampton home prices are not only among the most expensive in New York, but East Hampton real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.Unlike some villages, East Hampton isn’t mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in East Hampton are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, East Hampton is a village of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in East Hampton who work in management occupations (16.79%), teaching (11.73%), and sales jobs (11.19%). Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 17.69% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. Another notable thing is that East Hampton is a major vacation destination. Much of the village’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, East Hampton’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live. In addition, East Hampton is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates". Urban sophisticates are educated, wealthy, executives and professionals, who have urbane tastes in books, food, and travel, whether they actually live in a big city, or choose to reside in a small town. In big or medium-sized cities, urban sophisticates tend to frequent art institutions such as opera, symphonies, ballet, live theatre, and museums. East Hampton is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Such areas are often places that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery. Even though East Hampton is a smaller village, it has many people who hop on public transportation – mostly the subway for their daily commute to work. Typically, these people are commuting to good jobs in the surrounding cities.Do you like to read, write and learn?
