Milton is a somewhat small town located in the state of Vermont. With a population of 10,689 people and three associated neighborhoods, Milton is the eighth largest community in Vermont.Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Milton is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Milton is a town of professionals, sales and office workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Milton who work in management occupations (12.02%), office and administrative support (11.67%), and sales jobs (9.94%). Of important note, Milton is also a town of artists. Milton has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Milton’s character. Also of interest is that Milton has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US. One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 10.34% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Milton has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Milton has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Milton than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Milton may be for you. One downside of living in Milton, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 30.56 minutes every day commuting to work. The overall education level of Milton citizens is substantially higher than the typical US community, as 31.42% of adults in Milton have at least a bachelor's degree, and the average American community has 21.84%. The per capita income in Milton in 2022 was $48,340, which is wealthy relative to Vermont and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $193,360 for a family of four. However, Milton contains both very wealthy and poor people as well. The people who call Milton home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Milton residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Milton include Irish, French Canadian, French, English, and Italian. The most common language spoken in Milton is English.
