Living in Gardiner

Gardiner is a somewhat small city located in the state of Maine. With a population of 6,106 people and two associated neighborhoods, Gardiner is the 62nd largest community in Maine. Gardiner has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic cities in the country.

Also of interest is that Gardiner has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 8.52% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

The city is relatively quiet, having a combination of lower population density and few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. For example, Gardiner has relatively fewer families with younger children, and/or college students. Combined, this makes Gardiner a pretty quiet place to live overall. If you like quiet, you will probably enjoy it here.

One downside of living in Gardiner, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 30.67 minutes every day commuting to work.

As is often the case in a small city, Gardiner doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

The overall education level of Gardiner is somewhat higher than in the average US city of 21.84%: 25.68% of adults 25 and older in the city have at least a bachelor's degree.

The per capita income in Gardiner in 2018 was $35,701, which is middle income relative to Maine, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $142,804 for a family of four. However, Gardiner contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Gardiner home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Gardiner residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Gardiner include English, Irish, French, German, and Scottish.

The most common language spoken in Gardiner is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Chinese.
