Overview

Callicoon is a tiny town located in the state of New York. With a population of 206 people and just one neighborhood, Callicoon is the 963rd largest community in New York. Callicoon has a large stock of pre-World War II architecture, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns, Callicoon isn’t mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Callicoon are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Callicoon is a town of professionals, transportation and shipping workers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Callicoon who work in art, media, and design (19.00%), the sciences (14.00%), and sales jobs (11.00%).

Of important note, Callicoon is also a town of artists. Callicoon has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Callicoon’s character.

And if you like science, one thing you'll find is that Callicoon has lots of scientists living in town - whether they be life scientists, physical scientists (like astronomers), or social scientists (like geographers!). So, if you're scientific-minded, you might like it here too.

Also of interest is that Callicoon has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 16.84% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Callicoon is a major vacation destination. Much of the town’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Callicoon’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Callicoon has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Callicoon has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Callicoon than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Callicoon may be for you.

One downside of living in Callicoon, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 38.92 minutes every day commuting to work.
