Montauk profile

Living in Montauk

Montauk is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of New York. With a population of 4,318 people and two associated neighborhoods, Montauk is the 364th largest community in New York.

Montauk home prices are not only among the most expensive in New York, but Montauk real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 20.53% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Another notable thing is that Montauk is a major vacation destination. Much of the town’s population is seasonal: many people own second homes and only live there part-time, during the vacation season. The effect on the local economy is that many of the businesses are dependent on tourist dollars, and may operate only during the high season. As the vacation season ends, Montauk’s population drops significantly, such that year-round residents will notice that the city is a much quieter place to live.

In addition, Montauk is home to many people who could be described as "urban sophisticates". Urban sophisticates are people who are both educated and wealthy, and thus tend to be older, richer, and more established than young professionals. "Urban sophisticates" is not just about being educated and well-off financially: it is a point of view and state of mind, one that you might call 'urbaneness'. But such people can and do regularly live in small towns, suburbs and rural areas, as well as in big cities. They read, support the arts and high-end shops, and love travel.

Montauk is a good choice for families with children because of several factors. Many other families with children live here, making it a place where both parents and children are more likely to develop social ties with other families. The town’s good public school district and large population of college-educated adults provide an environment conducive to academic success. Many people own their own single-family homes, providing areas for children to play and stability in the community. Finally, Montauk’s overall crime rate ranks among the lowest in the country, making it one of the safest places to raise a family.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Montauk has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Montauk has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Montauk than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Montauk may be for you.

One of the nice things about Montauk is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

Even though Montauk is a smaller town, it has many people who hop on public transportation – mostly the subway for their daily commute to work. Typically, these people are commuting to good jobs in the surrounding cities.

The education level of Montauk ranks among the highest in the nation. Of the 25-and-older adult population in Montauk, 49.43% have at least a bachelor's degree. The typical US community has just 21.84% of its adults holding a bachelor's degree or graduate degree.

The per capita income in Montauk in 2018 was $83,843, which is wealthy relative to New York and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $335,372 for a family of four.

The people who call Montauk home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Montauk residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Montauk include Irish, Italian, German, English, and Russian.

The most common language spoken in Montauk is English. Other important languages spoken here include Spanish and Other Indo-European.
